“I don’t feel much at all.” “I’m good.” 

“I’m alright.” “I’m fine.” 

“I really don’t feel much one way or the other.” 

The typical man is deeply disconnected from his emotions, and it’s entirely by design. It’s a desirable skill growing up in the Man Box Culture where you risk humiliation for showing your feelings. And yet, once men get into relationship, this same defense mechanism destroys intimacy, connection and ultimate marriages. Wives are currently responsible for initiating 75% of the divorces in the U.S. and the biggest reason I’ve heard is “I can’t connect with my husband.” Why? What’s going on here? 

Part of the reason is a little known, pressing issue called alexithymia, which means having no words for feelings. Alexithymia is an ABSENCE of emotional intelligence and it is truly a severe difficulty for most men as it has been linked to issues like infidelity, marital disagreements, heart disease, high blood pressure, GI system issues, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and more.
