My Son Died From Fentanyl. My Guest Trafficked It. Ex-NFL Star - Shame, Redemption & the Courage to Heal

What happens when a father who lost his son to fentanyl sits down with a former NFL player who got arrested for trafficking it?
Nearly three years ago, my son Brett died from a fentanyl overdose. My guest, former NFL player Jeff Hatch, was arrested after a heroin addiction led to trafficking fentanyl. Two very different experiences with the same devastating drug — and a chance to explore grief, responsibility, forgiveness, and redemption.
Jeff's story begins with extraordinary achievement: Ivy League graduate, third-round NFL draft pick, millionaire at 22. He had everything our culture tells men to want, yet was running away from himself.
When injuries ended his NFL career, addiction took hold. Even after finding recovery, he relapsed — and through small compromises and secrets, crossed a line he never imagined: trafficking fentanyl. His downfall cost him his career, reputation, relationships, and freedom.
But that's not where his story ends.
In this deeply personal conversation, we explore the distance between the man we show the world and the man we believe ourselves to be — how shame fuels secrecy, secrecy feeds addiction, and achievement becomes a prison.
We also explore what it actually takes to change — not the Instagram version, but the messy work of responsibility, honesty, self-compassion, rebuilding trust, and living by your values.
In this episode:

  • Why success can't cure shame

  • The dangerous power of secrets

  • The Man Box and its hidden costs

  • Accountability without self-destruction

  • The Inner Kingdom: how protective instincts can destroy the lives they're meant to protect
Perhaps the most powerful part was discovering that healing doesn't require denying the harm we've experienced or caused. Jeff never asked me to excuse what he'd done, and I didn't need to condemn him to honor my son's memory. Instead, we found something more meaningful: understanding, compassion, accountability, and the recognition that people can change.
Jeff describes his life today with a simplicity that stayed with me: "I am not a ghost today." He measures his worth now by whether he is an honest husband, a present father, and a man living by his values.
And watch for a surprise appearance by my son Brett, who chimed in from the other side to say (more or less), "I approve of this. Keep moving forward, guys!"
This episode is for anyone who has struggled with shame, addiction, grief, or the belief that they must achieve more to be enough — and for anyone who loves someone with addiction, or wonders whether redemption is possible.
