Hey there and welcome back to the Evolved Caveman podcast where we explore the raw, the real, and the revolutionary path to healthy masculinity. I'm your host, Dr. John Schinnerer, and today's episode is a little different. It's not advice, it's not theory. It's a love letter to you, to every man listening right now.
Because the truth is we are in a moment of reckoning and rebirth. Just last week, equi Mundo released their State of American Men 2025 report. And I'll be honest, it hit me hard, not just as a psychologist who works with men, not just as a husband or a father, but as a man. And so I wanted to offer this not as data.
As devotion.
So today I'm gonna read you this love letter from me to you, a man, a human, a heart learning to heal
to the men of America. I see you. I see you carrying the weight of a world that tells you're not enough, unless you produce more, provide more, prove more. I see the quiet exhaustion behind your eyes. The loneliness to which you will never admit, the pressure to never crack, to never cry, to never kneed.
I don't just see you, I feel you.
The State of American Men report laid at bear. 86% of men and 77% of women. Still believe a man's worth is tied to being a provider. But what happens when the economy fails you? When the jobs disappear, when the bills outpace the income? What happens when your student loans will never be paid off?
Because your job barely pays a living wage. You begin to believe you are the failure. That belief, it's not just painful, it's actually deadly and it's wrong. You are not the problem. The system has failed you. We were sold a pipe dream from the get go. Go to school, get good grades. Get into a good college, find a good job.
Work your ass off for a corporation that doesn't give a shit about you, Mary. Buy your own home, have kids, work some more retire and then you'll be happy. So what's the problem here? There's numerous problems. What if you have learning problems like both of my sons had? What if you're dealing with A DHD or anxiety or depression or something else?
What if you actually get into a good college but can't pay off your student loans until you're 65? What if you're a good man, work hard, but still can't afford to buy your own home? What if you lose your job and can't support your family? What if you actually make great money, but you've given so much of your time, attention, and energy to work that you lose those relationships at home, those of your wife and kids who are now pissed at you because you are never home?
Because you are busy being a provider for them. You see the catch 22 here. What if you get sick? What about if you get divorced? What about if you choose the wrong woman to marry and she ends up taking half your money, ruining your reputation and destroying your life? All of these things can lead to serious financial stress.
And the report found that men under serious financial stress are 16 times more likely to think about suicide. 16. And this pain is compounded by something even more insidious, isolation More than half of men. More than 50%. One out of every two say, no one really knows me. No one really knows me. Think about that.
You're not imagining it. The rules of masculinity haven't loosened. They've gotten tighter. The expectations are growing more rigid, more extreme. You're told to dominate, not relate. To control, not connect, to repress, not express, and it's fucking killing us. Men who most strongly endorse these outdated man box norms, they're over six times more likely to consider suicide.
But know this, you are not broken. The crisis you feel isn't you. It's the echo of cultural norms and outdated definitions of manhood. You are not alone. All the other men I've talked to over the last 30 years want the same deep connection and emotional belonging that you do. But the old rules have made it hard to reach out.
There is another way forward, a way beyond the man box, A path defined by emotional honesty. Mutual care, freedom from rigid expectations and a secure, connected version of you. Imagine a world and a future, your future in which you can feel financially challenged without losing your worth. You can express vulnerability without shame and be met with compassion and understanding.
You can be both strong and emotionally available. You can love deeply, care deeply, and still feel man enough. You can find purpose not just through work, but through relationships, caregiving, and community. And this actually is where the light shines through in this report. Fatherhood, caregiving, real meaningful connection.
The report shows that men, especially dads who are emotionally involved, who show up for their kids, who embrace care and connection are 30% more likely to say their life has purpose. And we know one of the main foundational pillars of a happier life is that you feel your life is meaningful. That's not fluff, that's science.
Here's my message to you, my heartfelt message to you. You are not broken. You are not failing, and you are sure as hell not alone. The old model of masculinity was never built for wholeness. It was never built for connection. It was built to keep us separate, but we can rebuild together.
So imagine a new kind of manhood, one where your value isn't measured by your paycheck, but by your presence, where you can be both strong and soft. Where caregiving is part of being masculine, where emotional intelligence is strength, where real connection replaces performative toughness. It's not a fantasy, it's the future.
If we choose it.
So here's what I ask of you today. One, reframe masculinity, becoming more human doesn't make you less of a man. It's simply embracing all of your humanity. Two, find your tribe. Surround yourself with men who support authenticity and vulnerability over bravado three. Invest in relationships at home, at work, in your community.
Lead with care, volunteer serve others. Number four, speak your truth. Even if your voice shakes, even if you fuck it up, even if the other person will not hear you or change their behaviors, at least you know you spoke your truth. Number five, practice asking for help. It's not weak. It's wildly courageous.
It draws people closer to you. It builds connection. You, my brother, are more than what you've been taught. You are worthy. You matter.
So thank you for listening. Thank you for staying. Thank you for trying, and thank you for being part of this movement to evolve manhood. One heart, one man, one act of courage at a time.
And if this resonates with you, I invite you to dive deeper. You can join me and my partner Jo on. The Love Isn't Enough podcast where we talk about attachment, connection, and relationships.
