Episode 90: Maneuvering Manhood In The Army: Leadership, PTSD, and Spirituality

itunes pic
Watching Band of Brothers inspired Cameron Harman to volunteer for the U.S. Army. He wound up in the Afghanistan war. This is his story. How does one go from solider to PTSD to spiritual student? Is it necessary to be a mean, out-of-control asshole to be respected as a leader in the military? What motivates people better — fear or love? To what extent is fear a necessary motivator in battle? To what extent is physical strength needed to be masculine? Is it so important that steroids are a viable option? What does PTSD look like/sound like/feel like? The impact of insults on our masculinity and how easily manipulated we are by them (e.g., Cam wanted to get a brain scan for his traumatic brain injury due to an IED. His C.O.’s response, “Ok bitch boy, you go have the crazy doctors check you out!”). What sort of psychological damage do we inflict on others when our masculinity and mental health are out of whack? The big idea that depression in men comes out as irritability or alexithymia (i.e., the inability to name what you are feeling). Cameron Harman, veteran of the U.S army and Afghanistan war. After service over seas he suffered from PTSD. He tried therapy and counseling both in the military and out. When he hit rock bottom, he began to study Buddhism and spirituality. He deeply connected to the texts and teachings. By practicing meditation and changing his perceptions, he healed my PTSD. His healing changed the way he sees the world. Hermit_Radio (podcast) was a way to give back to the world by sharing his knowledge. He now lives life with two principles: love everyone and tell the truth. Episode 88: Taming The Anger And Irritability That Comes With COVID

Episode 88: Taming The Anger And Irritability That Comes With COVID

itunes pic
Anger, frustration, resentment, irritability — all of these are nearly inevitable during the shelter-in-place stress of COVID. But what do we DO about them? How do we turn down the volume on these destructive emotions as well as the relationship-killing behaviors that they fuel? Relationships die via the death of a 1000 paper cuts. These paper cuts consist of small (to large) acts that create anger, resentment, and annoyance — things like being ignored, showing up late, insults, criticisms, stonewalling, abuse, thoughtlessness and more. If you want to be successful, if you want to be happy, there is no more important question than how to turn down the frequency and intensity of anger.

Join Dr. John and author and speaker, Thomas E. Ziemann, in a powerful and practical discussion around managing irritability.  Tom is the author of “Taming the Anger Dragon: From PISSED OFF to Peaceful” as well as “Creating the Relationship of Your Dreams: How to Manifest It from Fantasy to Reality”,  “The Department of Zenitation: A Laymen’s Guide to Making Spirituality Work in Real Life.” Tom delivers engaging, uplifting lectures on Relationships, Life Purpose, Meditation, and Anger Management.  He is the proud father of two brilliant daughters, married to his best friend, and is a lover of cats.  He lives near Portland, Oregon. Tom’s books are available on amazon.com. Find out more about Tom at https://tomziemann.com.

Episode 87: All Of Life Is Sales: Here’s How You Get Better At It

Episode 87: All Of Life Is Sales: Here’s How You Get Better At It

itunes pic
I used to hate salespeople – always trying to push some product on me they didn’t believe in and that I didn’t need. Now, in my maturity (wink, wink), I realize the importance of sales – the fact that in some undeniable way, all of life is sales. That is, nearly every conversation we have is an attempt to persuade one another. Whether it’s about what to have for dinner, or what car to buy. Begrudgingly, I have accepted the need for sales and persuasion. After all, one part of psychology is researching the most powerful hacks to persuade others, and how to defend yourself from them. So I was very excited to have Jason Cutter join me to discuss the finer points of sales.

Jason Cutter is the CEO of Cutter Consulting Group, author of Selling With Authentic Persuasion: Transform from Order Taker to Quota Breaker, and host of The Sales Experience Podcast. He sees himself as a Sales Success Architect for companies and individuals, providing coaching, training, and consulting for companies around the world who want to dramatically improve their selling effectiveness.

What makes him unique is that he didn’t have an upbringing focused on sales, such that his bachelor’s degree is in Marine Biology. Despite this, and not getting his first real sales job until he was 27, he figured out how to be successful in sales and has made it his mission to shift salespeople away from the classically taught manipulation tactics and inspire and train them to achieve sales success by becoming Authentic Persuaders.

How A Young Therapist Goes From Surviving To Thriving

How A Young Therapist Goes From Surviving To Thriving

itunes pic
Join Dr. John for a revealing conversation with a brilliant, young therapist, Eli Weinstein. What’s it like to work in a psych unit? How do you stay calm when the shit hits the fan? What is radical self – care and why is it more needed now than ever before? What are some ideas for how to engage in radical self – care? How well do movie representations of therapists accurately depict true therapy (e.g., Lucifer, Good Will Hunting)? What’s the difference between traditional therapy and coaching? How does a therapist deal with having a suicidal client? What do we truly control as therapists? As humans? How do you learn to manage your emotions as a therapist? How do you “careless? ”And why does it matter? The importance of having perspective and gratitude based on your clients. What man box lessons do you learn growing up as a (moderate) Orthodox Jew in NYC? Eli is a Social Work therapist who has worked in a psych hospital, intense outpatient clinic and currently works in a community clinic in queens. He created ELIvation to fill a need to help those in struggling times and add extra inspiration and motivation into everyday life. Eli has been featured on Kelly Clarkson show, IVF Warrior, Fruit ful, Breaking Taboo and on multiple podcasts ranging from parenting, relationships, mental health and infertility. His main goal is to help people on their journey to add support, care, empathy, expertise, and insight. His podcast which targets men is The Dude Therapist.

Increase MPH & Step On The GAS For Greater Success And Happiness!

Increase MPH & Step On The GAS For Greater Success And Happiness!

itunes pic
A valuable conversation with Jay Scherr on what we need for greater success AND happiness, including topics of …

What motivates us to radical change and transformation?
The need for men to check their egos for greater success and happiness
The path to happiness for men – Internal validation (vs. external validation)
Being aware of the misery caused by social comparisons
At what age do we stop learning?
Jay’s formula for success:
MPH GAS – Mindset, Purpose, Habits, Goals, Action = Success
The crucial need for intimate knowledge of your core values

About Jay Scherr

Jay Scherr, owner of J. Scott Consulting Services, has loved all things business since he can remember. After attending Virginia Commonwealth University, Scherr spent over 30 years working with corporations and entrepreneurs. When the time was right, Scherr jumped at the opportunity to apply his extensive knowledge and experience to help other business owners achieve their goals and objectives.

As a business improvement consultant and coach, Scherr focuses on areas where he can help make the greatest impact on his clients’ business. “I help entrepreneurs, small and mid-size business owners optimize performance and get their business fit by creating a framework and providing the tools that strengthen the foundational components of their business while creating clarity, focus, accountability, discipline, scalability, and predictable results,” he said. “This enables my clients to close the gap between where they are and where they want to go.”

Looking ahead, Scherr is focused on continuing to grow his business by helping the right clients create the business of their dreams. What advice does Scherr have for aspiring entrepreneurs? “Do something that you love and that gives you purpose,” he said. “Do your homework, define your target market and provide a solution that solves a real problem for that market. Fulfill a need, don’t create one. Start building your network early – as Harvey Mackay says, ‘dig your well before you’re thirsty.’ Surround yourself with amazing people who share your values and get your vision. Have a written strategic plan, set realistic and stretch goals, have metrics in place to measure progress, and execute! Be in proximity to those you can serve with your product or service. Lastly, engage with mentors who have relevant experience and can provide guidance.”

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly of Masculinity

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly of Masculinity

itunes pic
An important and enlightening conversation with two of the top experts on masculinity – Dr. Ron Levant and Shayna Pryor, M.A.

What is the difference between being a man (biological sex) and masculinity (gender roles)?

Why should we care about masculinity and Man Box culture?

How do men learn what it means to be a man?

How do men deal with divorce? How do men deal with being a single parent?

Are boys as emotional as girls? Or are they more rational as is commonly assumed?

To what extent are men the recipient of sexual or physical abuse?

To what extent are most men happy?

Why is shaming so important for men policing other men?

What percentage of men subscribe to traditional masculine ideology?

What makes up traditional masculine ideology? Homophobia? Being a player? Avoid all things feminine? Restrict vulnerable and caring emotions? Toughness?

Is there a connection between physical and sexual violence and a strong belief to traditional masculine beliefs?

Ronald F. Levant, EdD, ABPP is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at The University of Akron; Past President of the American Psychological Association (APA) and APA Division 51; and two-term Editor of APA Division 51’s quarterly journal, Psychology of Men & Masculinities.

Shana Pryor, MA, is a doctoral student of Counseling Psychology at The University of Akron. She has spent the majority of her career focusing on issues surrounding men, masculinity, and sexual trauma.

Ron and Shana are co-authors of the book The Tough Standard: The Hard Truth About Masculinity and Violence. Dr. LeVant has also authored numerous other books such as Masculinity Reconstructed: Changing the Rules of Manhood at Work, in Relationships, and in Family Life, and numerous others.

Stop Lying To Me: How To Tell The Truth From Facial Expressions

One of Dr. John’s passions is emotions: How they are expressed; how to manage them; and how to recognize them in one’s self AND others. Did you ever see the Fox TV show Lie To Me? That show was 95% based on the science of Dr. Paul Ekman, who has been called the world’s best lie detector. Our guest this week, Dan Hill, studied extensively under Dr. Ekman. And the truth is written all over your face. Find out how you can improve at spotting liars in this episode.

Guest Bio:

Dan Hill, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized expert on the role of emotions in business, politics, sports, and popular culture. Dan pioneered the use of facial coding in business to capture and quantify emotional responses, and his company, Sensory Logic, has done market research work for over 50% of the world’s top 100 B2C companies over the past 20+ years in addition to being the recipient of seven U.S. patents. Dan’s business book Emotionomics was chosen by Advertising Age as one of the top 10 must-read books of 2009. Besides having been a political pundit for CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and Reuters, Dan has also made appearances on ABC’s “Good Morning, America” and NBC’s “The Today Show” and received front-page coverage in The New York Times for his work in pro sports.

Dan’s latest three books range from Famous Faces Decoded: A Guidebook for Reading Others (an EQ primer) to Two Cheers for Democracy: How Emotions Drive Leadership Style and First Blush: People’s Intuitive Reactions to Famous Art. Harness The Masculine For A Happy, Successful Relationship

Harness The Masculine For A Happy, Successful Relationship

itunes pic
Divorce cracked GS Youngblood open to the reality that he needed to learn some new skills to be better in relationship. He spent years learning from experts so he could answer the following questions for himself:

What happens to us emotionally immediately following separation?

How do we deal with the depression and anxiety that follows breakup?

How to ask for help from friends after divorce?

What is the masculine core and how do we lead from it?

How can men be less emotionally reactive in relationship?

How to bring clarity and decisiveness into relationship?

What do women long for n a relationship?

Why do men call women ‘crazy’ when they get
emotional?

What’s the best way to deal wit h your partner when she/he gets emotional?

What is sexual leadership and how do we cultivate it?

What are the top tools to create a happy, thriving, successful relationship at home?

GS Youngblood is the author of “The Masculine in Relationship”. He coaches men in relationships on how to live, love, and lead from their Masculine core. He specializes in “nice guys” who are with strong women. His teachings combine deep embodiment work with the framework of the Masculine blueprint from his book.

His writings are filtered through the laboratory of his and his clients ’real-world, long term relationships (including the successes and spectacular failures) to see what actually works and what doesn’t. Through this lens of Masculine leadership, he also pulls in principles from a variety of fields: psychology, martial arts, tango, meditation, and tantra.

Why Do People Die By Suicide?

Why Do People Die By Suicide?

itunes pic
Today on The Evolved Caveman, a sobering yet incredibly important topic, that of suicide. This conversation may be triggering for some listeners. If you are actively considering suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Dr. Thomas Joiner is a world renowned expert on suicide and is the author of “Lonely at the Top: The High Cost of Men’s Success” and “Why People Die by Suicide.” He has spent much of his career trying to find out why people die of suicide. The desire for death is comprised of two psychological states. One is a perception of being a burden to others, and the other is a feeling of not feeling connected to a family or a relationship. Combined with a third aspect — an “acquired capacity” for suicide (a fearlessness for death)— the risk for suicide is increased.

Today, an important talk on depression and suicidality, particularly in light of a recent CDC report that came out August 14 of 2020 on a 40% surge in mental health challenges due to COVID; a conversation about the best ways to help men avoid lives of quiet desperation – feeling less than, isolation from others and addiction – through positive changes individually, in our culture and support services. If you are a man living with these challenges, or if you are worried about a man in your life, you must listen to this conversation.

Dr. Joiner is The Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at Florida State University (FSU), Tallahassee, Florida. Dr. Joiner’s work is on the psychology, neurobiology, and treatment of suicidal behavior and related conditions. Author of over 600 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Joiner was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Residency Fellowship. The Lawton Professorship, which Dr. Joiner received in 2010, is FSU’s single highest honor. He was a consultant to NASA’s Human Research Program, and is the Director, with Pete Gutierrez, Ph.D., of the DoD-funded Military Suicide Research Consortium, a ten-year $70 million project. Largely in connection with Why People Die by Suicide, he has made numerous radio, print, and television appearances, including articles in The Wall Street Journal, a radio interview on NPR’s Talk of the Nation, and two appearances on the Dr. Phil Show. He runs a part-time clinical and consulting practice specializing in suicidal behavior.

Thomas Joiner’s Books:
• Why People Die by Suicide
• Myths about Suicide
• Lonely at the Top: The High Cost of Men’s Success
• The Perversion of Virtue: Understanding Murder-Suicide

Have Better Sex By Breaking Out Of the Man Box

Join Dr. John for an arousing and revealing talk about how
men can be the successful AND happy in the areas of sex
and relationships. Unfortunately, it’s likely that more
women than men will listen to this because most men
have been socialized to act as if they know it all and to
never ask for help. This is concerning as one study by sex
researcher Melanie Curtin shows that sexually
experienced women (20 partners or more) report 90% of
their male lovers are simply not good in bed. Well, you
know what they say, you can lead a horse to water…!
Topics in this episode include…
How do we begin re-creating romance in a long-term
relationship?
How men can arouse and excite their partners
during the day (in anticipation of sex that night) by
tapping into women’s biggest sex organ – the brain.
How do men get better in the bedroom?
What does it mean to be successful in a romantic
relationship?

Realistic Optimism: Another Happiness Tool

Realistic Optimism: Another Happiness Tool

Many people I meet are pessimistic and defend their pessimism as “being realistic.” And they are correct — Pessimists do see objective reality slightly more accurately than optimists. However, their accuracy comes at a cost – greater misery. The choice is a bit of accuracy versus greater happiness. It’s no choice to me – I choose to be happier. Tune in to discover how to be more realistically optimistic with Dr. John on The Evolved Caveman Podcast.

The Exercise to Evoke the Positive Past For Greater Happiness

The Exercise to Evoke the Positive Past For Greater Happiness

itunes pic
Research shows that the more time we spend in the positive past, present and/or future, the happier we are. Here is one exercise to train your mind to spend more time in the positive past, eliciting the positive emotions:

Gratitude, awe, relaxation, elevation, joy, contentment, love, curiosity, appreciation, courage, pride, self-compassion, compassion, hope, laughter, peacefulness, serenity, or inspiration.

The more tools you get in your tool belt, the more happiness and life satisfaction you’ll experience!

Your Happiness Begins With Awareness

Your Happiness Begins With Awareness

itunes pic
You are not your mind. Your mind is merely a random thought-generating machine. Your happiness begins with greater awareness of how your mind works, how your emotions work and how you behave. Join Dr. John for a brief intro to increasing awareness using a simple framework you can overlay on your mind to ask, “Where is my mind taking me right now?” and “Do I want to be there?” This is the start of an ongoing series for The Evolved Caveman Podcast and Global Positive News Network on Instagram TV. If you want to be happier, if you want to be more satisfied with life, if you want greater success, it starts here!

75% of U.S. Employees Are Disengaged At Work. Now What?

75% of U.S. Employees Are Disengaged At Work. Now What?

itunes pic
25% of U.S. employees are actively engaged at work.
50% of employees are slightly disengaged (doing just enough to stay employed) and
25% of employees are actively disengage at work and they are sabotaging projects, stealing and backstabbing others. HR Magazine, Feb. 2004)
Most employees are fearful for their job and are thus willing to withstand many humiliations. This, in turn, leads to passive-aggressive behavior which eventually turns to outright anger.

These numbers have not changed over the last 15 years.

The biggest reasons for disconnection are 1) the low EQ of the direct supervisor and 2) the belief that the company just doesn’t care about the employee.

Firms that publicly commit to creating a great culture outperform those that don’t by 200-300% (Business and Society Review, 1999).

The old mantra of “Win at all costs” no longer holds water in the business world. Integrity and respect are rapidly becoming strategic essentials of business. Why? What does this look like?

What happens when we get lost in our own hyper-competitiveness and lose sight of our values?

Why are disrespect and incivility so common today?

The Center for Respectful Leadership Founder and Executive Director Gregg Ward got his start as a professional actor, writer and director in New York City during the 1980’s. He didn’t find much respect as an actor however. A few years later, when working with the NYPD, Gregg discovered that respect between police officers and the people they served was in many cases almost non-existent, causing both groups serious challenges.

Through research and experience Gregg discovered that respect was a key driver of performance, productivity, loyalty, and partnership.

Even more surprising, he determined that disrespect and incivility in the workplace was negatively impacting business processes and outcomes far more than anyone understood; and disrespect was alarmingly common.

This observation led to the pursuit of an understanding of the importance and best practices surrounding conflict resolution, interpersonal communication, and (most importantly) respect.

If Dad Is A Con Man, What Do You Learn About Being A Man?

If Dad Is A Con Man, What Do You Learn About Being A Man?

itunes pic
Laurence Johns grew up as a skateboarding punk in the rough and tumble South East side of London with a con man as his father. What lessons do you learn about what it means to be a man when your dad is in and out of prison? And, more importantly, how do you overcome those lessons?

Other topics discussed…

The “exhausting game” played by Laurence growing up which focused on safety as power over others. Power was gained in his world by getting one over on another first, moving up the pecking order, being good at fighting, and being smarter than others. One lesson – find out what others want and exploit that desire. Another lesson – you are either predator or prey (and if you are prey, you deserve whatever you get).

How are men dealing with the isolation and lack of meaning due to the pandemic? The need for self-compassion and self-care rise to the top of the list right now.

In the U.K., homosexuality was illegal up until (roughly) 1968, so touch was “dangerous for men.” And men need touch just as much as women.

Boys wrestle and fight as a way to get their need for touch met in a socially acceptable way.

Laurence Johns is a men’s personal development professional, writer, and the Training and Outreach Director of the ManKind Project UK&I, a charity that supports all men to establish and pursue their life purpose and nurture their emotional wellbeing. The ManKind Project UK&I is part of a global network that has been offering men transformational experiences and supporting them in peer-facilitated men’s groups since 1984.

Laurence is the co-founder of ‘Project: I am John’; a not-for-profit organisation that creates accessible and entertaining entry points for men to ask the difficult questions about masculinity, have difficult conversations, and provide ongoing support and development at a price point that excludes no-one by using a ‘paid forward’ model. The project’s first feature film is currently in pre-production and is set for release in 2020. He is currently writing his first book on men’s personal development. Laurence works, writes and skateboards in South East London where he lives with his partner and their son.
