How To Be More Resilient
Why is it that some people bounce forward after being struck by life’s most difficult problems, while others get stuck?
Problems, traumas, challenges, pain. Life guarantees them all. The real question is how quickly do you recover when faced with life’s difficulties. Whether we are talking about small scale set-backs, or life threatening situations, some people are quick to return to energetic, positive living. They seemingly take such things in stride. Others do not; some become paralyzed, others reduced to depression or post-traumatic stress disorder.
Resilience is defined as the capability to adapt to stressful circumstances and to bounce forward from challenging events. Resilience is a set of skills that helps build enduring resources and a better future after difficult or traumatic events. Over the last 40 years psychologists have sought to discover and identify the elements of human resilience, into order to teach all of us how to cultivate more of it. In a stressful world, boosting resiliency can help ward off depression and other mental illnesses, while boosting self-confidence, achievement and productivity. It’s a matter of bouncing forward with greater energy, wisdom and confidence than prior to the trauma. So how do we do this?
